Examination of a Wear-Reducing Muzzle Device

Abstract : Tests have been conducted on a device intended to reduce muzzle wear. The device is made of a hard, wear-resistant material attached to the muzzle end of the gun tube. The bore diameter of the device is slightly less than the bore diameter of the gun. The intent is to reduce yawing motion of the bullet inside the gun tube and increase accuracy. The tests showed that the constriction reduced the muzzle velocity and increased bullet dispersion. Hexagonal boron nitride was used in an attempt to reduce frictional forces between the bullet and gun tube and increase muzzle velocity. Although this was not achieved, the amount of gun tube fouling appeared to be reduced with its use.
