Progress on formulas for core loss calculations

Calculations of core losses in a machine are important to both the machine designer and operator. In this paper several recent models used to predict core losses are reviewed. Most of the models presented here were derived based on the already existing knowledge of core loss formulas and modifications of those formulas to minimize the errors in prediction. A new algorithm is proposed for one of the already existing models to enable better prediction of core losses over a wide range of flux density and frequency up to 2 kHz and 4 kHz for some materials depending on the available data. This algorithm is tested on different types of steel and the results presented.
