A Compilation of Internship Reports - 2012

Cimel Sun-photometers collect data used to calculate the aerosol optical thickness (AOT), which tells how much light is being refl ected by particles in the air and is important for climate change research. Due to the way the AOT data is normalized, a cosine curve will appear in the data when something is obstructing the photometer’s tubes. Using Interactive Data Language (IDL), the AOT data was fi t with a multiple-linear regression to determine if a cosine curve was present. The resulting coeffi cients were plotted and a histogram made to see if they can be used to fl ag problems automatically. The histogram showed the cosine coeffi cients shifting away from zero, even though it wasn’t noticeable by eye, thereby successfully detecting a subtle change in transmission in one of the detectors. More research is needed, however, to verify this method’s accuracy and to detect other problems in addition to obstructions.
