Review of the Uses of Computed Tomography for Analyzing Instruments of the Violin Family with a Focus on the Future

X-ray computed tomography (CT) has proven to be a valuable tool in studying antique, as well as new, instruments of the violin family. This article reviews the history and workings of CT and then focuses on the future and the relatively new method of quantitative analysis of CT images. Potential new uses of the obtained data are presented.
