Origin and History of the Moon

Today, it is generally agreed that the great craters of the moon were produced by collisions of meteorite or asteroidal objects which arrived on the moon at some time during its long history. It is recognized also by all students of the subject that there has certainly been some volcanic history on the moon. Some prefer to believe that this consisted of great lava flows which filled the maria regions of the moon. Others doubt this, and suggest that there was some limited amount of water on the moon during its history, but admit that there are small crater-like volcanos on the moon which apparently were produced by some mild volcanic action. The problem of the origin of the moon is not understood at the present time, and we have no real consensus on the subject
