Effects of added-damper distribution on the seismic response of buildings

Abstract A study is made of the effects of changes in the distribution of added viscoelastic dampers on the seismic response of simple building systems, and information and concepts of structural behavior are developed which are useful for the appropriate interpretation of the effects of such changes on the seismic response of more complicated systems equipped with these dampers. It is shown that the behavior of tall buildings is generally more sensitive than that of short buildings to changes in the distribution of the dampers, and design implications of such behavior differences are identified. In addition, assessments are made for the effects on the response induced by stiffness increases resulting from the addition of the dampers; and by actions associated with the so-called nonclassical damping. A numerical method of analysis is reported which can be efficiently applied to compute the dynamic response of structures with nonclassical damping.
