Finite Element Analysis on Mechanical Properties of Steel Column Base

The steel column bases have been widely used in steel structure workshops and the connections play important roles in these buildings. Therefore, the study on the mechanical properties of steel column base is necessary. In the paper, the three dimensional finite element models is established to present the behavioral characteristics of steel column bases under cyclic loads, and the factors of contact are taken into account in the modeling. The effect of the axial force and the number of bolts on the connection failure modes and ultimate capacity are analyzed. Moreover, hysteretic behaviors and dissipation characteristics are obtained with the moment-rotation hysteretic curves, and the contrastive analysis of the test results have been carried out.The results indicate that the characteristic of the hysteretic behaviors of ordinary bare column base is slip-type,the hysteretic curves are plump, and energy dissipation capacity is high. The moment-rotation hysteretic curves agree well with the test results. Some conclusions drawn may be quite useful for the design and application of such connections.
