Some time has now passed since computers made their debut in the field of literary studies, and the practice of using a computer to assist in tasks such as the preparation of concordances or word indexes has become well established (Booth, Brandwood and Cleave, 1958; Colin, 1960; Levison, 1964). Recently the use of computer techniques has been extended to another class of problems of literature, those involving fragments and inscriptions. This paper describes one of the most common problems in this class, and some computer techniques which may be used to solve it.
