FDDI: Status and Perspectives

Abstract The increasing demand for larger networks with higher capacity and additional services is stimulating broad acceptance of FDDI as a new LAN generation. A data rate of 100 Mbit/s makes FDDI suitable for connecting supercomputers and powerful workstations as well as supporting new, more-demanding user applications. Although the standardization of FDDI is still going on, many products are becoming available on the market today. Thus the problem of product design and installing strategies for FDDI networks become more important in order to achieve high performance, reliable and cost effective communication systems. Both the basic concepts implemented in the protocol and the practical use of FDDI are the topics of this contribution.
