The four volumes reviewed in this essay are part of a SUNY series on Israeli studies edited by Russell Stone. The series, under the auspices of the Association for Israel Studies, is an important and impressive project that significantly expands the field of Israeli studies. The volumes in this series are interdisciplinary collections of essays that present the state of the art at the time that each book was edited. The two previous volumes in this series are: Books on Israel, Vol. 1, edited by Ian Lustick (1988) and Critical Essays on Israeli Society, Politics, and Culture, Vol. 2, edited by Ian Lustick and Barry Rubin (1991). This project is part of a wider endeavor of the AIS, which was founded in 1985, to create a forum where international scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines could convene to discuss studies on Israel. While each volume is unique, all the editors have kept to the initial goal of the series, to review current scholarship about Israel and issues on the research agenda. This has been achieved through interdisciplinary presentations and with essays that present the state of the art.
