Advanced control of energy consumption

This paper describes a number of model based predictive energy control systems that have been developed at EA Technology over the past six years for the supervisory management of electrical load. The systems developed have been applied to electric central heating, domestic hot water storage, the control of ice storage for air cooling, farm energy management including water pumping, water heating, and milk chilling and multiple room cold stores. Two control techniques are considered; CELECT and GeMMS. The paper focuses on the use of advanced control techniques to optimise the use of an ice store to reduce waste energy, cost to the user and generator, and distribution and transmission costs. Better control of the energy we use and reduced pollution are also obtained. (10 pages)
