Twenty years of standardized, manual, histopathological reporting have facilitated the design and development of a unique, working, fixed-option, integrated computer information system. Essential system features include–through the one-time, interactive entry of numerically pre-coded data–medicolegal report generation, accounting procedures, data-bank update, batch inquiry and the application of different sets of diagnostic criteria algorithms. Free-text entry is also permitted, allowing the pathologist full reporting freedom. Such features have applicability in other medical specialities as well. Related aspects in the existing cardio-respiratory pathology information system are described and system's design considerations and advantages common to specialist areas where decisions depend on or could be improved through retrievable information based on population records are outlined. The development of a Generalized And Parameterized (GAP) integrated Speciality-Specific Information System (SSIS) is recomm...
