Using Optimization for Structural Analysis Productivity Improvement on the F-35 Lightning II

This paper describes how finite element-based optimization of integrated structure has improved structural analysis productivity while helping to achieve minimum weight structural design on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The paper focuses on the issues involved in applying optimization tools and methods in a production aircraft development environment, discussing the value, challenges, and opportunities for improvement that have been discovered through their application. Two examples are presented to illustrate the application of the tools to integrated structural components, the issues involved with optimizing such components, and the productivity benefits that were realized.
