New criteria for optimization of QMF banks to be used in an image coding system

When filters for use in quadrature mirror filters (QMF) banks are developed, the only criteria are often frequency behavior, i.e., the filters should have a flat passband and large attenuation in the stopband, and a condition on reconstruction fidelity. A discussion is presented of several other criteria that are important for QMF banks that are to be used in the coding of images, especially image sequences. It turns out that these criteria are different from those that are used in the coding of speech. A list of such criteria is proposed along with an evaluation of the resulting filters in an image coding environment. This evaluation clearly demonstrates the importance of additional criteria in filter design for image coding.<<ETX>>
