Dialectometry: A Short Overview of the Principles and Practice of Quantitative Classification of Linguistic Atlas Data

When treating dialectometry in this article, I would first like to get some facts clear from the very beginning in order to avoid possible misunderstandings. First of all, I am considering this topic as a Romance geolinguist. It seems necessary to emphasize this point, because a certain dissimilarity in the linguistic geographies of Romance, German, English and Slavonic linguistics can be observed. This fact sometimes complicates mutual understanding. Secondly I would like to make clear that my contribution relies completely and solely on data taken from linguistic atlases. Whenever I subsequently speak about “geolinguistic variation”, be aware that this is in consideration only of linguistic atlas data. Every other kind of variation has necessarily to be disregarded. A Latin motto for this procedure would therefore be: extra atlantes linguisticos nulla salus dialectometrica.
