Isolation and characterisation ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae from hydrospheres

To isolate novel strains ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae, we screened the organisms in various Japanese hydrospheres for yeast strains that are ethanol-tolerant and efficient fermenters. One such strain, which was designated TY-2, was identified asS. cerevisiae after analysing its 28S rDNA sequence and physiological properties. Unlike the reference industry strain K7, this strain assimilated cellobiose, creatine and creatinine. It also produced ethanol slightly more efficiently than (K7 (92.7±3.7% vs. 87.8±9.4%, respectively). It did not differ from K7 in its temperature and NaCl tolerance. The cellobiose assimilation activity of TY-2 may be useful for cellulose biomass fermentation processing.
