SIMPLE DECISION RULES FOR ACCEPTANCE OF MIXED TRAFFIC STREAMS

Mixed traffic means different bandwidth requirements for different types of calls. In asynchronous transfer mode (atm), to be used in the future broadband isdn, the calls will use virtual connections. In this context it is not obvious whether a new call can be accepted or not. A detailed decision rule is given for different traffic streams, based on probability calculations of the number of active virtual connections. Also a simpler decision rule is derived by approximate analysis, in which each connection belongs to one of two possible traffic streams. Here the decision rule is based on a simple formula for the allowed mean aggregate atm channel loading.(a)
