Separation and Molecular Characterisation of Copolymers

Recent developments in the molecular characterisation of statistical, block and graft copolymers are described with special reference to the determination of the compositional heterogeneity, which is an essential factor controlling the physical and physico-chemical properties of this class of materials. Unfortunately, progress in this field has been rather slow, and as yet we have no established methodology of general applicability. As to specific copolymers, however, a number of experiments have demonstrated that elaborate use of one or a combination of the presently available techniques along with full utilisation of the knowledge of the copolymerisation kinetics does lead to considerable success. As things stand, this contribution is not intended to survey methodological details but rather to illustrate the several works which happened to come to the authors’ notice, hopefully to give some insight into this hard-to-solve problem. Accordingly, the literature herein cited by no means forms a complete list of the papers published in this area.
