Autocorrelation of ultrashort pulses at 1.5 /spl mu/m based on nonlinear response of silicon photodiodes

Measurements of the autocorrelation function of picosecond pulses at 1.5 /spl mu/m from an erbium-doped fibre laser and amplifier have been carried out, exploiting a nonlinear intensity-dependent response in a silicon photodiode. The same photodiode is used both for the generation and the detection of the autocorrelation signal, allowing the construction of a compact and inexpensive optical autocorrelator.
