A fifty-year eddy-resolving simulation of the world ocean : Preliminary outcomes of OFES (OGCM for the Earth Simulator)

A fifty-year eddy-resolving simulation of the world ocean has been performed on the Earth Simulator for the first time. Several global aspects of the circulations and regional characteristics in some specific areas simulated in the high-resolution model are compared to available observations. The results demonstrate a promising capability of representing realistically meso-scale variability, including separation of the western boundary current from the coast, meso-scale eddy generation near the strong current systems, as well as appropriate water masses in the world ocean. This climatological simulation was finished within one month of the wall-clock time, suggesting a possibility of a quite long-term eddy-resolving simulation and/or a large number of case studies and parameter studies. This success encourages further advance toward a superhigh resolution coupled simulation of the atmosphere and the ocean.
