EVALUATION OF THE ACTIVITY OF AN ITALIAN HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILL

Barricalla is an hazardous waste landfill active since 1988. The plant is made of four sites, characterized by different ages and design and management criteria, according to the contemporary regulations. Over the last 25 years Barricalla Company developed self-control systems and supported monitoring and field research studies. This paper is aimed to the description of the historical evolution of physic-chemical, environmental and management issues of the landfilling activities in the plant. The comparison of the behavior of the different sites is evaluated considering the changes due to the transformation of the boundary conditions (regulations, waste characteristics, operational conditions and meteorological changes). The study is completed by the evaluation of ecological indicators (mainly CO2 emissions or equivalents and recovered areas) aimed to the analysis of the positive and negative consequences of Barricalla activity on the territory
