China: Libraries, Archives and Museums

This entry examines the challenges and the path of library development in China, with emphasis being given to the twentieth century when new library institutions and practices were first introduced. In just over 100 years Chinese libraries and librarianship have evolved from ancient royal depositories to modern information centers. This entry discusses the underlying political and social changes and examines the contributions of important leaders who have promoted China’s library development. An overview of some of the important archives and repositories in the country is presented
