Equine phaeohyphomycosis caused by Drechslera spicifera.

Introduction Phaeohyphomycosis is a name applied to diseases caused by various species of dematiaceous fungi whose tissue form consists of septate, dark-walled hyphae (1). The filaments are not organized into granules, as is the case with mycetomas, but are dispersed singly or in small groups in the lesions. The individual diseases vary in severity and clinical course, depending upon the fungus involved, the tissues that are affected and the host. Phaeohyphomycosis occurs in both man and lower animals. Equine phaeohyphomycosis has rarely been recognized (4). Diagnosis of a new case in a horse prompted this report.
