Tracking tourists in the digital age

Abstract The question of mobility is of immense importance in tourism research. Yet the current methods used to collect data on spatial and temporal activities are limited in accuracy and validity. Recent developments in the field of digital tracking technologies have produced a range of widely available systems, including land-based tracking, satellite navigation, and hybrid systems. The study reported here summarizes both the conventional and the new methods used to collect data on the spatial and temporal activities of tourists. It offers an account of three experiments in which tourists were tracked using the aforementioned technologies.
