Decision support tools to assist in airport surface management

In order to attain maximum efficiency within the National Airspace System (NAS), significant improvements in collaborative decision making are needed. This paper will focus on performance in the airport terminal area (airport surface management and its interaction with management of the terminal area airspace) and looking at methods for improving coordination between Airline Operation Centers (AOCs), relevant FAA facilities and Ramp Control. To complete this work, we have conducted a series of empirical studies directed at identifying and understanding: The tasks performed by various individuals within the above listed organizations that pertain to airport surface management. The tools currently used to perform these tasks. Current problems and inefficiencies associated with these tasks. Potential methods for improving performance.
