Development Of A Radar Tactical Terrain Imaging And Camouflage Simulation

The following paper describes, briefly, a variable parameter, variable flight path, imaging radar scene simulation capable of integrating, in a single database, information describing natural terrain as well as larger scale cultural targets. Additionally, passive radar countermeasures may be simulated by 1) reducing the RCS of target modeling elements, or 2) modifying the natural terrain. Countermeasure effectiveness may be evaluated via a hierarchal scene matching algorithm that correlates a camouflaged scene section with the original scene. The final utility of this scene generation technique lies not in predicting absolute target RCS, but in producing imagery with strong target versus background information content. Indeed, it is the impact of various countermeasures on the recognizability of the overall scene or parts thereof that is currently of primary interest.
