Recent surveys by qualified medical teams have revealed an enormous degree of sleep-related problems from simple insomnia to the inexplicable nocturnal death syndrome. It has been suggested that as many as 32% of the population of industrialized countries have suffered some form of sleep disorders. Comprising over 800 entries in an A-Z format, this encyclopaedia contains descriptions of the most frequently occurring sleep disorders - insomnia, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and nocturnal eating syndrome and remedies, including "home" remedies and over-the-counter products. In addition, the authors have included an extended introductory essay on "The History of Man and Sleep" and "Psychology and Sleep" to give a broad overview of the field.
