Inflectional morphemes and functional projections in Germanic V2 languages

What I want to discuss in this paper, is whether tense and agreement inflection on the verb entail the existence of functional projections in the syntax. Chomsky (1992) has proposed that verb movement is directly related to tense and agreement inflection on the verb. The functional projections AGR and Tense are assumed to be generated universally in finite sentences. If the verb is inflected for Tense and subject agreement AGR and Tense have strong features which must be checked. The inflected verb is generated as such in VP and must therefore move to check strong Tense and agreement features. This model predicts that functional heads will be made visible by verb movement, at least for languages which have verb movement.
