Abstract The primary system components and architecture of the LOCUS operating system and the Transparent Computing Facility are identified. The current level of TCF functionality is described. References to the LOCUS OS are used in areas where the fundamental concepts are described. The initial two sections outline the vision of the LOCUS Operating System, and provide definitions of key terms. The third section identifies the functionality provided by IBM's Transparent Computing Facility. The fourth section describes several of the key algorithms and basic system structure, and the last two sections provide insight into future directions for the technology, and summarize the material presented.
