VALIDATION OF TURBULENCE MODELS FOR TURBOMACHINERY FLOWS – A REVIEW

ABSTRACT The state of the art in validation of turbulence models for internal flows in turbomachinery is reviewed, based on current work in the thematic area 6 (Turbomachinery Internal Flows) within the EU- Network QNET-CFD (see www.qnet-cfd.net ). This review first discusses the available databases for validation of turbomachinery flows, and describes the approach within QNET-CFD which is based on a mixture of real test cases and simpler underlying flow regimes, with strict quality control procedures for their selection. The review then describes some issues and difficulties related to turbulence modelling in turbomachinery. The extreme complexity of turbomachinery flows ensures that even the most recent advanced turbulence models are not yet satisfactory for predicting the detail of the unsteady turbulent flows that occur.
