Abstract An experimental investigation of the effectiveness of ferrographic methods applied to diesel engine wear monitoring was carried out. A series of car engines running in service were considered and the wear phenomena were studied on the basis of total particle density and large particle concentration trends determined through ferrographic analysis of oil samples. Results have shown that ferrography can be successfully used in this specific application.
