Jerusalem/Daughter Zion in Isaiah

While the fate of Jerusalem is a central literary theme in Isaiah as a whole, several divergent motifs occur side by side. After presenting a concise review of recent scholarship, this chapter surveys three distinct images of Jerusalem. First, it examines the motif of Yhwh’s special protection of his chosen city and a remnant of survivors against attacking enemies, commonly referred to as the “Zion tradition.” Then, it studies the visions of divine restoration of Jerusalem, a motif that presupposes a state of complete destruction. Female imagery powerfully illuminates the suffering and abandonment of the city, casting Jerusalem as a bereaved mother and a deserted wife. Finally, the chapter looks at the visions of Jerusalem as a worldwide center for peace, wisdom, and worship.
