Some new classifications of census enumeration districts in Britain: a poor mans ACORN

This article reports some results from a project sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council that is concerned with developing a classification of the 130000 Enumeration Districts for which 1981 [U.K.] Census of Population data are available. The cluster analysis techniques developed are described and their applicability to data analysis in other countries is considered. The problems of obtaining stable results are discussed and their sensitivity to a number of operational factors are investigated. (EXCERPT)
