Using ultra‐violet and infra‐red techniques in the examination and documentation of historic textiles

Abstract This article assesses the use by textile conservators of established non‐destructive examination and photographic techniques using ultra‐violet (UV) and Infra red (IR) wavelengths. Methods were researched to determine if the techniques could be easily implemented using inexpensive equipment to produce relevant results. After brief discussion of UV and IR applications to other fields of conservation, possible applications for the examination and documentation of textiles are outlined. Trials were undertaken and three examination and photographic techniques found applicable to textiles are explained, including equipment, supplies and exposure guidelines. The resulting photographs of historic textiles are reproduced to illustrate initial results and to encourage further trials.
