Derivation of Double-input DC-DC Power Electronic Converters

Abstract The energy storage unit in an all-electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid power-train directly impacts the performance, fuel economy, cost, and weight of the vehicle. New structures for energy storage units that utilize both batteries and ultra-capacitors are widely under investigation. In order to fully utilize the advantages of each energy storage mechanism, the employment of multi-input power electronic converters is inevitable. In this article, two new double-input converters are introduced. Their different steady-state operating modes are analysed, and their voltage transfer ratios are derived. Simulation and experimental results are used to verify the expected operational characteristics.
