Spectral estimation: An impossibility?

Many methods of estimating the power spectrum are based upon the autocorrelation function. As the data is finite in duration, only a portion of the autocorrelation function can be directly estimated. An example of the insufficiency of using only a portion of the autocorrelation function for spectral estimation is discussed.
