PREDICTION OF SETTLEMENT OF SPREAD FOOTINGS ON PARTIALLY CEMENTED SANDS

This report describes field tests with a Menard pressuremeter in conjunction with standard penetration tests. The site chosen for the tests was a bridge founded on spread footings on one of the sand types encountered in the Perth metropolitan region. The results are compared with published correlations between soil modulus and standard penetration test blow count. Settlements of the footings are calculated using several different methods for comparison with observed settlements at the site. It is concluded on the grounds of cost and practicability that the standard penetration test is currently preferable to the pressuremeter as a basis for settlement prediction on sands. A method of settlement prediction is recommended for the type of sand encountered. (Author) /TRRL/
