Semantic Similarity, Cognitive Psychology of

This article discusses the range of different approaches to capturing semantic similarity. Specifically, multidimensional scaling models and featural models (e.g., Tversky's contrast model) are introduced alongside newer approaches such as structural alignment accounts, context vectors, connectionist models, and generative probabilistic models. In addition, references are made to several cognitive abilities in which semantic similarity plays a role, including categorization, inductive reasoning, and memory.
