Fine structure of excited 3E state in nitrogen-vacancy centre of diamond

Abstract New analysis of hole burning and magnetic circular dichroism observations on the fine structure of the excited 3 E state in the nitrogen-vacancy centre of diamond finds that the effective spin–orbit contribution is much smaller than previously estimated. This situation means that the spin–spin interaction determines the fine structure in centres with strain splittings >0.5 cm −1 . It is discussed that this result is more consistent with the observed weak strain dependence of hole-burning features than earlier calculations and supports the six electron model of the centre.
