Trust and accountability: preserving human values in interactional experience

INTRODUCTION The common good of our information infrastructure depends on designs through which users can establish and maintain trust and accountability. Without preserving such human values, users will be reluctant to embrace this infrastructure as a means for conducting their daily affairs -commerce, communication, health, work, and education. l Help users to develop intuitions for assessing the type and degree of risk in a specified on-line interaction. l Identify meaningful interface metaphors. l Embed methods for tracking the sources of errors when they occur. l Explore the role of standards for methods, testing, and design. l Develop a conventional notation to indicate a system’s trustworthiness under specified conditions of use (like the UL approval seal).
