TDMA-based MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks: A survey and comparative analysis

Recent advances in technology proliferate the use of Wireless Sensor Network in various fields such as environmental monitoring, intrusion detection, industrial automation, surveillance and so on. WSN has various design constraints such as energy consumption, scalability, delay, traffic adaptability, throughput and overheads which require an efficient MAC protocol to address these issues. Recently, several TDMA-based MAC protocols have been proposed to reduce the energy cost due to idle listening, control overheads and collision. This paper provides an overview of TDMA-based MAC protocol designed for large-scale cluster-based wireless sensor networks. In addition, aqualitative comparison of these protocols is also presented on basis of analytical expressions for energy consumption and transmission latency.
