Recommendation of Rilem TC 154-EMC: “Electrochemical techniques for measuring corrosion in concrete”—measurements with embedded probes

This recommendation presents the background for monitoring the state of corrosion of a reinforced concrete structure using embedded probes for detecting either the actual electrochemical behaviour of the reinforcement or changes in the electrolytic behaviour of the concrete surrounding the reinforcement. Different types of probes are described from which information about corrosion potential, concrete resistance, oxygen availability, critical chloride front and carbonation depth as well as the corrosion rate of the reinforcement in selected locations can be obtained. The probes may be installed either when new structures are designed and built, or after a maintenance or repair process.
