Machining Performance of TiCN/Al 2 O 3 Multilayer and B-TiC Nano Multilayer Coated Inserts on Martensitic Stainless Steel in CNC Turning

Martensitic stainless steels (AISI410) are widely used in aerospace industries, turbines, compressor components, shafting, nuclear applications, etc., because of the excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. Machinability and surface roughness are poor in turning AISI410, because of low thermal conductivity, high ductility, high strength, and rate of work hardening. Coated carbides are basically a cemented carbide insert coated with one or more thinly layers of wear resistant materials. It is well known that coating can improve the SR. This chapter presents the optimum cutting parameters for dry CNC turning on AISI410 by different types of coated cutting tools using Taguchi technique. The cutting tools were used multilayered TiCN + Al2O3, and nano multilayered B-TiC. Experiments were carried out by using Taguchi’s L27 orthogonal array. The effect of cutting parameters on SR was evaluated and optimum cutting conditions for minimizing the SR was determined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for identifying the significant parameters affecting the responses.
