Increasing employment in ex-heroin addicts I: Criminal justice sample †

Fifty-five probationers and parolees with heroin abuse histories were randomly assigned to an experimental 11-hour “Job Seekers' Workshop” or to a 3-hour information only control workshop. The two groups were found to differ on scales measuring interview skills and on rate of employment. By 3 months posttreatment, approximately 86% of experimental subjects had found employment as compared to 54% of controls. Differences between conditions were apparent as early as 1 week posttreatment. Comparisons with results obtained with other samples of drug abusers were discussed.
