This book documents and analyzes an important but little known phenomenon in Israel of the 1990s: the activities and accomplishments of Israeli women peace activists. In her int.roduction to the book, Emmett notes that women moved from a marginal space in Israeli politics to the center, though their pioneering efforts have not always been recognized. The book shows that "to place women peace activists at the center of a discussion is to illuminate significantly Israel's political life itselt'(2). Women's activism mobilized gender structurally, by creating women-only groups and in weaving gender into a peace position. Women's groups were galvanized after the 1982 Lebanon War. Groups such as Women against the War and Parents against Silence mobilized mothers to protest the war. Official documents issued by the various women's groups focused on three political aims: ending the occupation, talking with the Palestine Liberation Organization and two states for two nations.
