Raman-assisted transmission: toward ideal distributed amplification

Raman ASE and Rayleigh scattering noise can be managed by optimizing the pumping schemes and transmission fiber properties. We discuss the recent advances in these areas that bring us closer to the limit of ideal distributed amplifier.
