ISO 9000 in Mauritius: Reasons, Benefits and Drawbacks

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to compare the reasons for, benefits and drawbacks of the ISO 9000 certification in Mauritius, from the perspective of the ISO 9001 certified organisations between 2006 and 2011.Design/methodology/approach - In order to achieve the aim of this study, a literature review of ISO 9000 studies was carried out. The research also involved the development and application of a survey instrument in the year 2006 and 2011. The data was analysed using SPSS software.Findings - The results of the 2006 and 2011 survey shows that the predominant reason for seeking ISO 9000 certification in Mauritius is to improve efficiency throughout the organisation while the main drawback of ISO 9000 certification in Mauritius is that it brings along more paperwork. In the 2006 survey that the major benefit of ISO 9000 certification in Mauritius was that it led to a more methodical way of keeping records while the 2011 survey shows that the principal benefit of being registered to ISO 9000 standards is that it leads to an improved quality system.Research Limitations - Due to time and financial constraints, a larger number of respondents could not be obtained while conducting the surveys. Originality/value - The results provide insights into how ISO 9000 certification has evolved from the year 2006 to 2011 in Mauritius.
