Modeling LNAPL Extraction with a Trench System

This paper presents a brief review of three numerical and one Excel spreadsheet model for the transport of LNAPL in porous media. The numerical models include two finite-element models, ARMOS and MARS and a finitedifference model, COMPSIM. These models use numerical algorithms to solve the flow and transport equations for water and LNAPL. The Excel spreadsheet model has been developed and published by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and is relatively simple to use. An example is presented illustrating the application of the API model for LNAPL recovery by a trench. In addition, practical limitations of the API model are identified.
