Abstract Natural speaking is accompanied by greater overt motor activity than occurs in several non-speaking activities. The increase is especially marked for free motions of the hands (“gestures”), and particularly of the right hand. The right-hand activity is related to left-hemisphere control of speech functions, as determined by a dichotic listening task.
