A novel approach for detection and removal of High Impedance Faults in power system based on voltage parameter

A High Impedance Fault (HIF) is a condition that occurs in the power system when a power transmission line breaks physically and comes in contact with the ground. Such faulty conditions do not draw a considerable amount of current from the system and hence, these faulty conditions are not detected by the primitive overcurrent protection scheme. When the system is subjected to any kind of fault, then we must understand that the detection of such faults are very acute and their removal is also important. This paper presents the novel technique for detection and removal of High Impedance Fault based on the voltage values. The proposed technique has been tested on a 3 phase system, where a voltage sensitive relay has been designed constitute of digital devices, which detect the high impedance fault in the system. The result shows that the HIF can be detected instantly with high accuracy and these would be removed to protect the system.
